ID Project 3- Orthographic Drawings

In this final project, we were required to form a group of 6 and choose a given site level within Taylors University Lakeside Campus. Individually, we were asked to select  a space of about 10m x 10m from the chosen level. Explorations and observation were to be done and an orthographic drawing presentation are about to be submitted. The objective are implementing observation skills, be able to record, organize, interpret and describe issues via visual communications as well as to introduce the techniques of drawing in the built environment practice.

  • My progress
My group:
Me
Chan Jia Xin
Yee Zhen Li
Siong Jia Yii
Hwang Wei Li
Chong Hui Xin

During every tutorial session, our tutor, Ms Ida guided and helped us a lot in compiling our orthographic drawings. I appreciated her comments and for my drawings very much as they really helped much. My group members and I always assisted each other in doing the measurements and drawings. It was a smooth and fun progress.

  • Final Product
My drawings including the site plan, location plan, floor plan, elevation , section and detail drawings were annotated and arranged on 2 A2 boards as presentation boards.

Reflection:
Through this final project, I expanded my knowledge and skills in the field of architecture. I learned more about observation skills and orthographic drawings methods. I also practised to draw using the right architectural techniques using the right tools such as drawing my plan to a scale of 1:50 using a scale ruler. I had experienced and learned a lot of new things with my group members, other classmates and tutors.

I learned to solve the problem of getting the most accurate measurements for my drawings and think critically on how to organize them well on the boards.

As the leader, I learned to guide and help my other group members in selecting and measuring their sites as well as help them with the right techniques of orthographic drawings.

I also learned to put most of the theories taught in classes into practices and finally complete my orthographic presentation boards.

ID Project 2- Observation Sketch & Measurement

For the second project, we were given a task to individually choose 2 objects to sketch and conduct measurement of them. The objective of this project is to identify the  fundamental principles, elements and techniques in sketching, drawing, design process and presentation skills. We could also  Demonstrate observation skills and be able to record, organize, interpret and describe a variety of issues via visual communications effectively.

  • The Progress

During the first tutorial session, we were asked to choose one of the fruits and vegetables provided by the lecturers in class to learn some 3-dimensional drawing. We had chosen a small cute bitter gourd! I had learned about plan drawing, elevation and section drawing of an object. It was truly fun doing sketches based on a real object. I enjoyed the cut section part although my pen knife ended up stuck with the bitter gourd juices.
The lecturers also briefed us about the drawing tools and method of measuring an object accurately. Here are some tools I had bought.

My lovely Artline and drawing pens!

For this project, I had searched for my whole room and ended up choosing this two objects which are my precious and daily objects --> my Nikon digital camera and one side of my shoe. Here are photos of my objects showing different direction of views.

Another interesting thing was we learned about architectural writing in tutorial class. We felt like going back to kindergarten, learning all the lettering and alphabets once again. It was fun anyway.

Second Submission from Sheau Hui Tan

Reflection:

Through this project, I trained myself more in observation and sketching skill. Drawing is always my hobby as it is a way of expressing myself but after understanding this subject, I came to realise there are many more different stories behind drawings. It is an important tool of representation especially for architects to present their ideas to the public. I get to be more interested in drawings through this project.

TGC logo
It is a lifelong learning when it comes to drawings.I learned to locate, extract and utilise information gathered from a real object and onto pieces of papers that can be understood by the others.
TGC logo
There are problems faced in everything we do, similar to this project. I learned to think more creatively so that I can imagine my objects' appearances on the papers.

After everything was taught by the lecturers, I was able to put them into my drawings. The theories taught were put into my practices.

Landscape architecture from Sheau Hui Tan

Reflection:
Through this project, I have learnt a lot not only about landscape architectural drawings but also the jobs of landscape architects. They played an important role in the construction industry and they are responsible of contributing to and comforting our natural and built environment. Now, I am also able to interpret the type of drawing representation used in the construction industry.
